The Maxwell family started in the citrus business in the 1920s. Steve Maxwell’s grandfather, Charlie bought land at Avon Park and moved from Georgia, where he was a rancher. The property started with a 10-acre grove and small log cabin. Steve and his siblings grew up in the cabin which sustained several additions over the years. Steve’s parents began selling fruit locally in the 1940s. They packed the fruit in wood baskets and put it on the train at the train station downtown. In the 1960s the packing house was built. Although the packing house was capable of handling commercial fruit, the main concentration was gift fruit and retail fruit sales. Over time, the business has grown and now includes a country store which attracts many Northern visitors and locals. Some of the specialty items available in the store are homemade orange ice-cream, jellies, marmalades, honey, citrus candy, and Florida novelties.
